Pete Galayda helped on the 319 project today by sanding down the outsides of two more side windows, as seen here. I sorted out the windows and other parts in the wood shop, then took my pad sander over to Barn 2 to work on the car.
Charlie made a test application of the red paint to a short section of the 319, and it looks fantastic! Almost a mirror-like finish, the best you can expect with tongue-and-groove siding. We also spent some time looking at paint samples for the Aurora Gray, which is much more difficult to match. We now believe there were at least two different versions of this paint used; we're pretty sure we have identified the type used on the 451 and can match it reliably.
I sanded down the windows sills and siding above the belt rail on the south side of the car. I also removed the hand rails, since those will need to be painted separately.
Our old friend "Trolley Bus Bob" McHugh was working on the 451 also, and great progress has been made in prepping both sides of the car. Once the roof canvas has been installed, it should be nearly ready for painting.
Julie Johnson stopped by to view progress on the 451 and 319, and we had some good discussion about what needs to be done next.
I also brought over another repainted window, and all of the window shade tracks from last week. After checking with Charlie, we decided I should go ahead and install them. The insides have been painted with two coats; the outsides have one coat of primer, and the second primer and finish coats can be sprayed in place. Here's what it looks like after installation.
