Phil Stepek pointed out to me that Pete Schmidt has posted on Flickr several pictures of a Veracruz open car in service in 1958. They're quite interesting. Note the huge beer advertisements (CERVEZA MOCTEZUMA!) painted on the ends. That will be a first for IRM!

Thanks, Scott, that's great! The interesting thing is that the author seems to know everything possible about the Veracruz system, and even he says the origin of #19 is not known.
ReplyDeleteI also liked the idea of a mule-powered interurban line: about 60 miles in 11 1/2 hours.
Before this, I wasn't aware there was any doubt of the origin of #19. Was it not originally built for VC?
ReplyDeleteI especially like that it proves once and for all that the VC cars were built with deck roofs and centered pole bases...now to find proof that they were built as double-ended cars too!
I remember old postcards from Trolleyville credit one of the open cars as having a Philadelphia background. I think it was the 19.
ReplyDeleteWell, the 19 was built by Brill, which was located in Philadelphia, so that's probably the Philly connection.
