Russell Plow

I read on the department blog that IRM now has the opportunity to acquire this CGW Russell snowplow. Your donations to restricted fund CGW 4051 will be most appreciated! This will be an important addition to our collection.

The CGW 4051 is of course one of the later steel versions, but the overall design is little changed from the earlier wooden plows, such as this Lackawanna Russell plow I photographed at Scranton many years ago.

  1. Does anyone know what its renumbering history was? All of the IRM-related information I've seen refers to CGW 4051 but the online photos show its current number to be CGW 1051.

  2. I was told that in person you can tell it is 4051 and not 1051. If you look at the posted photo and stare, you can kind of see the outline of the top line of the 4 to the left of what looks like a 1.

  3. I am by no means a DL&W fan, but I don't remember that the Scranton yard was laid out that way.

  4. Also, I thought the DL&W did a better job of maintaining their locomotives. Look at the rust on the 0-8-0's handrails and tender tank. Tisk risk risk.

  5. The Russel plow was built as CGW X 38 and was painted a bright orange. By the mid 1940's it wore the ubiquitous CGW maroon with black plow faces, roof, and underbody. That is the scheme I favor as it matches our restored CGW 601 caboose and would be a good consist for a possible SNOW TRAIN at IRM.

After CNW gobbled up the CGW the number was changed to CGW 4051 (confirmed), repainted into yellow with the CNW herald.

The CGW rostered three of these Russel plows in the X 36 to X 38 series.

  6. Of course, my dislexic fingers typed in the incorrect number. The comment should read - CGW 4150(confirmed), and perhaps my comment added to the confusion. Our intrepid webmaster has the correct information in his entry.

  7. Thanks for clearing that up, Bob. And I have a link to a picture that shows the number clearly:

  8. Thanks for the info! Good to know that 4051 is the correct number. As my father always said, "who are you going to believe, me or your own lying eyes?" :-)

  9. Not to continue the confusion, but the original and final numbers of CGW snowplows were furnished by Erich Russ.

    X36 X4056

    X37 X4057

    X38 X4051
