This year, I noticed May 10 fell on a Saturday. As you all know, the golden spike ceremony linking the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads occurred on May 10, 1869. Realizing this year was the 145th anniversary of that momentous event, Katy and I headed to Golden Spike National Historic Site in Promontory. The events that day were well-attended. We arrived at 10:30 am, which was too late to take part in the "champagne photo" recreation. However, the two locomotives were parked just west of the last spike site for visitors to inspect. Here is a photo of that event.
Folks,
ReplyDeleteI was at the Nevada State Railroad Museum on Saturday. I mention this because IRM has a surviving McKeen baggage trailer.
The highlight of the visit was the chance to see and ride in Virginia & Truckee Railroad #22 (second) the only surviving McKeen motor car.
Perhaps some day the McKeen trailer can pay a visit to Carson City.
The Nevada Museum also has V&T #17 passenger car which was built as a parlor car for Governor Leland Stanford and other high ranking members of the Central Pacific Railroad. Somewhere deep in its frames is the only surviving bit of any equipment that was at Promontory on that famous day in railroad history.
