Nailing Down the Roof

More progress on rebuilding the roof of the 277: On Friday I started by making another 50 linear feet or so of tongue-and-groove roof boards from poplar. This involves planing, ripping, and then cutting the tongues and grooves. This process was pictured earlier here.

I then started installing some of the new roof boards. Here we see the first five or so lengths fastened in. (My camera battery died, so these are cell phone pictures. Sorry.) They are nailed into the new carline sisters wherever possible. Everything is going together well. It's strong enough to walk on, which is why the new boards are already dirty. Although it was cold outside, when the sun is out it's pretty tolerable up on the roof.

Step over here to the workbench, where one of the skilled craftsmen at Hicks Car Works will cheerfully cut your lumber to the correct length. Maybe even cut it twice if necessary, although that never happens.
