Miscellany Sunday

Frank writes...

Sunday at the museum was kind of quiet, with several of the Car Shop regulars there in the afternoon working on various projects which were mostly ancillary to the trains themselves.

For me, I started out by taking a little time to pull a broken end window out of Shaker Heights 18. The above photo was taken before it was boarded up temporarily. This is a big piece of glass - nearly 3'x4' - but hopefully I can have a replacement cut and get it installed soon.
After that, later in the afternoon I spent some time working with Richard on sorting spare parts. Some of these were CA&E parts and, as part of a general department movement to better sort and inventory our supplies of spares, were moved to join some of our other CA&E parts. Sharp-eyed viewers will note a step well, a ceiling light fixture ring, and some cab heaters, which are similar to but slightly different from their North Shore counterparts.
In other news, you may have fuzzy memories of work being done on the 50th Avenue 'L' station on Saturday. Richard and Greg were back at it Sunday, working on installing plug fixtures in some of the canopy lights.
Soon the "pie pan" lights will be installed on the posts along the platform, which is exciting. The wiring has already been run and is just waiting for the conduit and light fixtures.
While Richard and Greg were working on the station, others were working on trying to resurrect a nonfunctional welder we were gifted. Above Joel (L) and "Two G" Gregg take a look at trying to get the thing to turn over with some electrical help from the department truck.
Why travel to Michigan when "motor city" is right here in Union? The 6655-6656 were over the pit with a newly-installed MG set which should put these cars back into revenue service this year, and alongside was this impressive display. Four rebuilt North Shore motors are in the back with two industrial motors, acquired as spares because they're nearly identical to the Electroliner's motors, to the left. In the right foreground is the long-suffering air compressor for the 451 which, it was discovered, has a crack in the bottom of the case that causes the oil to run out. Once that's fixed, though, hopefully the compressor can be tested and installed.

Are the portable heaters from the CA&E? They look exactly like the NSL motormans portable heaters. I assume they are the same manufacturer?

We think they're from the CA&E, though these seem to be the only CA&E ones in the collection. They've got to be from the same manufacturer as the North Shore cab heaters but have different details, including bar stock (rather than wire) handles and a bracket jutting off the base to keep the heater from drooping towards the door. They also have different plugs than the North Shore ones.

Over a number of various postings, you have been working on the Shaker Heights 18. As you are now working on a window, is it your intent to start painting the windows and ledges as they are in need of paint?

Has the crane blocking the door gotten fixed so that the 18 can be moved out under wire?

No, the track is still blocked.

The answer to Kirk's question is yes, by the way.
