Southern Railway in Steam

On Saturday we went down to Monticello to see Southern 401 in steam and ride behind it. Here are some pictures from the visit.

And I wasn't the only IRM member who had this idea. I happened to run into Dan and Chris Buck and Dave Fullarton there.

Another barn has been constructed; the track gang was working on the leads while we were there.

And there's also this nice new section house.

Thanks for sharing your travels, for this and others. That is one wonderfully restored engine that nearly looks like it just came off the erecting shop floor. Do they still use the former IT tracks? I was there quite a while ago around the museum's inception, and snooped around for any IT equipment lurking around. I still remember the tour of the IRM IT traction orange car consist hosted by a generous member when all there was at Union was essentially a single track, muck like it was later at Monticello. What a difference the years make. For the better.

The track past the depot on the IT ROW is used for passenger boarding, but the rest of it is used only for storage. It's not original IT track, of course; it was built during the 70's, and I helped with some of it. Most of the operation is on the former IC line.

The Monticello museum has certainly made huge progress since I was there. :)
