Just the Facts....

David pleads....

Historic railway equipment is constructed of materials that will deteriorate, even in the most ideal conditions, if left outside for a period of time.

Even in the relatively arid climate of Utah, outdoor storage is not ideal, as indicated by this piece of equipment, sitting at the Utah State Railroad Museum.  This is just a fundamental truth of historic railway preservation.

Indoor storage sounds expensive, and it is, see Mr. Kutella's comments below.  However, in the long run, it is more expensive to perform restoration work over and over, or let a piece of equipment deteriorate further outside.
However, YOU, yes you can do something about it!  IRM is in the process of raising funds for Barn 14.  There are several funds you can donate to, but we here at the Hicks Car Works ask that you donate to code name RISWEC for cars in the Electric Car Department Collection.  Make a minimum $25.00 donation today!  You can mail your check to this address:

Illinois Railway Museum
P.O. Box 427
Union, IL 60180

If you want to, you can donate through this secure online link.

Any bit helps, so donate today!

Where did you find a place that will store cars inside for $25.00 a linear foot? Maybe Walmart got into the business, but you have to buy a six-pack .... of car barns!

If this price was "buy now" on E-Bay, look out. They are probably offering barns for cars the size of the Chicago Tunnel Railroad -- you wouldn't be able to stand up in one!

We just do that once in a while to see if anybody is actually reading the material. Congrats to Pete for being the first to spot the planted typo.

Anyway, what is that thing? An interurban freight trailer?

YES, the amount would be $215 per foot. You remark it is expensive, but probably not really so high in cost. Heck, for that rate, you could have indoor garaged storage for your auto for $3K complete with track beneath it and paved aisles on either side, a nice tall 18 foot clearance to the rafters. WHAT A DEAL!

This is a golden opportunity to help fund the NEXT (hopefully not the LAST) barn at IRM. With enough donations now we could have a permit and be breaking ground next spring. Choose your poison as they said in the old western saloons. Pick your favorite department and donate on line for fastest service.

ALL DEPARTMENTS have candidates living outdoors which really ought to go under roof.

Randy, Bob and everybody,

I am glad to see tha that the two Boston & Maine cars indoors on a permanent basis. They are some rare pieces of Pullman construction.

Several B&M cars exist at the Strasburg Railroad in Pennsylvania; but they are full of
modern plywood and steel parts that Pullman did not put there! Hardly museum restoration.
