A Big Pit

I'm back from another trip to Arizona, mainly to visit my grandchildren and their parents, but no railfanning.  One thing that might be interesting, though, is probably the largest open-pit mine I've ever seen, at the isolated town of Clifton in a part of Arizona we hadn't been to before.  It's hard to convey how vast this operation is; you have to see it in person.

The town still has rail service, and while we were there, the local way freight came by and started switching the yard.  I wouldn't want to have to reproduce the paint scheme on that leading unit!

And there's a little 0-4-4T on display.  Just next to the old county jail.

Online information indicates this was "cobbled together" which I can believe, but it's better than nothing.

The depot has been well maintained and now serves as the town's visitor center.

And state route 191 winds through the open pit mine, giving you some great views of the operation.

Every driver should know how to change a flat tire, as my father would say.  This one might require two people, however.  I'm not sure I could do it by myself.
