WANTED - M15 Brake Handle

Calling all collectors! IRM is looking for WABCO M15 brake handles, of the type shown above, so that we have a spare or two in case we need one. These are typically solid cast iron, and you'll note that the D-shaped hole for the stem is at a 90-degree angle compared with the more common M22/M23 handle. If you're interested in trading, selling, or donating an M15 handle, please drop us a line!

It has been developed and tested using Chrome, Firefox, and IE7 with the screen set at 768x1024. If any other browser gives you a problem, please let me know.

The "Hicks Locomotive and Car Works" banner at the top is taken from original artwork of the company, which was in business from 1897 to 1911. The picture behind it shows the four restored CA&E wood cars at the Museum, starting with #309, which was built by the Hicks Locomotive and Car Works in 1907.

Our Current Projects
CA&E 36, 308, 309, and 319
For 2026, the 309 and 319 will be available for revenue service. The 308 may be used as a trailer. The 36 has broken leaf springs, and fixing this will be a priority.
CA&E 451, 453, and 460
The 460 has been reupholstered and is in regular service. The 451 is currently in the shop for interior restoration and mechanical work. New third rail beams are being made for all of them.
Shaker Heights 18
The 18 is operational; repainting is in progress.
Shaker Heights 63
Repainting of this car is nearly complete.

What kind of car would these go to?
Thanks for asking! For us, these are used on the CA&E wood cars 36, 308, and 309. There were other interurban cars that used this particular type of brake valve, but nothing that operates here.
This is technically called an M-12 handle. In this application, it's being used on M-15B brake valves.
(Your Westinghouse Air Brake trivia of the day!)
A further thought...this design of handle was also used in Philadelphia, on an ME-series (air with electric assist) valve of some sort. The examples I've seen were brass with a wooden handle, and could be tightened on the stem, like the private-purchase brake handles that were popular among CSL streetcar men.
