The subject of checking journals came up recently, and in particular whether you should allow the spring-loaded lids to slam shut. I was told many years ago by several people that Henry Cordell in particular, the master mechanic of the North Shore Line, was very adamant about not allowing the lids to slam. And I was taught to let them down gently. It's not hard to do:
So this was the Car Dept. official policy, I believe. But I'm afraid I don't recall exactly what the bad effects of allowing the lids to slam shut might be. Constructive comments are welcome!

Probably to keep dirt from the lid being projected onto the waste or pad.
