We noticed that this picture was hanging in Nick's office, and it's a good likeness of young Carl, among others. The date is approximately Jan. 20th, 1983, the 20th anniversary of North Shore abandonment. Photo by Jeff Brady. Those were the days, my friend.

Ah I remember that day fairly well, the first celebration of the end of the North Shore. Temperatures hovered between 28 and 37 I think all day, there was icy snow that persisted. They could not plow the mainline very well, so the three car NSL standards, on one of their trips, went beyond the red flag and got stuck on snow, floating on the motors and wheels lifted off the rail for the return current. A crew went out on the M-15 which was nice for the load and for the electric heat, although it was still in its M-Ugly paint scheme, which was a nickname given by Carl if I recall. We shoveled out the train, then made connection with a few shovels between the rail and the wheels to get it to budge back west. A frozen image in my mind was someone, or maybe two guys, with frozen stogies between their teeth, and an icicle hanging of the end of it. O. Anderson
And, Carl was always a good spirit about whatever project was the department priority, and was happy to get to play with the new arrivals and make them show their stuff. He was smart, clever, and a happy fellow. It was he that got Fox River 306 first running, and it had been in storage for quite a while at Brookins, If I understood that part. Sorry for his loss and hope other good memories are shared, at least at the gathering when it happens.
