Weighting For An Answer

We need to know how much each truck on one of the CA&E St. Louis cars weighs.  If you have any leads to reliable information, please let us know. You can either send me an email, or comment, or use the blog contact gadget in the right-hand column.  I can't thank you enough!

I don't have an exact answer (yet) but the trucks for 172 were 20,000 lbs each by our estimates. Of that, we assumed the motors were 10,000 lbs of that and the wheels/frame were the other 10,000 lbs. Assuming the motors are about the same, 453's trucks with motors should be less than that total, maybe around 15,000-17,000 lbs each.

I would think that there should be some information from when the cars were moved from Cleveland. From the photos of that move there were 2 trucks per 40 ft flatbed trailer.

The weight of an earlier standard truck is probably not the same as the 450-style trucks, because everything is different. The motors are 300V and a smaller, more modern design; the wheels are smaller; and the truck frames are cast rather than bolted together. The motors and wheels probably weigh less, but the frames may well weigh more. We need an actual measurement.

And you would indeed think we'd have the weights from moving the Trolleyville cars, but so far we can't find the info. Rats.
