Schmidt - Rochester

From the Schmidt Photo Collection, the Rochester Transit subway operation.

In 1927 the city of Rochester opened a city-owned rapid transit line to provide a convenient access to downtown for the various interurban lines, but by 1931 these interurbans had all been abandoned.   Nonetheless, local operation continued until 1957, using lightweight suburban cars built for the New York State Railways.  Except for about two miles downtown, this was not actually a subway, but laid in the bed of the old Erie Canal.
